Setting up a budget to have a home driveway tarred is a rather large expense that really needs to be researched and understood.
The first thing that needs to be researched or at the very minimum understood, is the fact where you get your prices from. There are many street pole and Facebook adverts out there that are out to make a quick buck and rip off the unsuspecting public.
So here are a few pointers to ensure that you are not the victim of a scam:
1. References are key, always ask for references. If the contractor came to your house to quote, then they have worked in the area before. Request where previous jobs were done and go look at previous work done.
2. Insist on written quotes with a breakdown of depth of tar and the crusher underneath the tar, the type of kerbings etc. You need to compare quote for quote.
3. Check history of companies, look for the following. Website, where they advertise etc. The more that is invested in marketing, the higher probability of good service.
Always ensure that their staff are reliable, permanent and most of all competent to do the work that is required. Deposits are generally required, do not pay more than 50% of the total price, and retain the other 50% until you are happy the job has been completed to your expectation.
Finally, only pay money into a business account, check that they have public liability, and staff are covered by workman’s compensation.
